Hel­lo and wel­come to Fit and Fab­u­lous with me, Dr. Orlena Kerek. I hope that you are feel­ing fab­u­lous and amaz­ing to­day.

To­day, I have a big ques­tion to ask you. Are you ready to step up and make changes starting now? To tru­ly trans­form your life, to stop just lis­ten­ing to pod­casts, to stop read­ing the books and to ac­tu­al­ly take ac­tion so that you can change your life.

A health coach helps you apply healthy habits in your life

So many peo­ple don't un­der­stand this con­cept of the work that a health coach does. A lot of peo­ple say, ‘Well, it's not a knowl­edge thing. I know what to do. It's just ap­ply­ing it’. And the an­swer is yes, of course. It isn't a knowl­edge gap. It is an ac­tion gap, a do­ing it gap.

It's like you read a recipe book and then you put it back on the shelf. You know what you ought to be mak­ing, but what are you mak­ing? It’s supposed to be the trans­for­ma­tion.

Applying healthy habits in your life required a bit of help

If you've heard me talk be­fore, I talk about the rick­ety bridge from where you are stand­ing right now to do healthy liv­ing.

I want all the ben­e­fits. I want healthy liv­ing to be easy so I can lead a long and healthy life. I want to wake up with buck­et loads of en­er­gy every sin­gle day and think I am lucky to be me. I feel on top of the world and I have a body that I'm proud of. I love my body and I love us­ing my body and I get to be my best self every sin­gle day, be­cause I am tak­ing care of it.

Those are all the ben­e­fits and you can in­di­vid­u­al­ize those ben­e­fits. For a lot of peo­ple, it might be, I want to spend more time with my kids. I want to re­al­ly en­joy my kids or my grand­chil­dren, or I'm par­tic­u­lar­ly wor­ried about get­ting diabetes or what­ev­er ill­ness runs in your fam­i­ly.

I do healthy eat­ing, healthy liv­ing, I get enough sleep and I've got a good mind­set. I do all of these things be­cause that's just my nor­mal life. I'm not putting in ef­fort to be healthy. I know the the­o­ry but how do I im­ple­ment that in my life?
And so that is the work that I do with peo­ple. We ap­ply it to your life and how to do it.

There is no magic solution to healthy living

Let me ex­plain that there's no magic cure. Think of the anal­o­gy of learn­ing a lan­guage. When I came to Spain, I had to learn Span­ish.

I used to listen to the Hitch­hiker's guide to the gal­axy on the ra­dio. If you haven't read it or lis­ten to it, they have this thing called a ‘bagel fish’ and they put it in your ear and sud­den­ly you can un­der­stand any lan­guage in the universe. When I learned Span­ish, it wasn't quite like that. I didn't just sud­den­ly wake up and spoke Span­ish.

There are dif­fer­ent ways of learn­ing a dif­fer­ent lan­guage. I did this for a pe­ri­od of time and I don't think it's the best way to do it, but I just sat down and I learned words. I had a cou­ple of books and I just sat down and learn those.

My chil­dren learn dif­fer­ent lan­guages. They're all learn­ing French from this app called Duolin­go, which is a fun app. They en­joy that time on the app and now they can speak French really well.

Learning to have a healthy life can be fun and easy

There's no magic cure. You have to do some­thing in or­der to learn a lan­guage, but you can choose to do some­thing that is fun and en­joy­able like my kids did with Duolingo, or you can learn to do it the way I did it, which I don't nec­es­sar­i­ly recommend. And it's the same with healthy liv­ing.

There's no magic way towards living a healthy lifestyle

You have to work out how in your life you can eat veg­eta­bles, you can pro­vide healthy food, which ob­vi­ous­ly en­tails buy­ing, pre­paring, cook­ing, eat­ing.
You have to work out why you're not do­ing that. And the same goes for ex­er­cise, sleep, and your mind­set.

Those are the four pil­lars. It's such an easy sys­tem when you step back and look at it but it's more dif­fi­cult when you ap­ply it to your life.

You can ei­ther do it the dif­fi­cult way where you're strug­gling or you can do it, the fun and easy way. And that's what work­ing with me is like, it's the fun and easy way.

What does it look like to work with me?

We look at the four pil­lars, healthy eat­ing, healthy ex­er­cise, healthy sleep, and mindset. In my group pro­gram, we do it in four-week blocks. You start off doing healthy eat­ing, and we're go­ing to con­cen­trate on that for four weeks.

Then we're go­ing to con­cen­trate on ex­er­cise for four weeks, and then we're go­ing to con­cen­trate on sleep for four weeks. Through­out the whole time you are learn­ing these mind­set tools.

Mindset is an important pillar of healthy living

The mind­set piece starts from day one be­cause it’s the bit that trips you up. When you set your­self a task, your mind is in charge. If you plan on eating vegetables then you find your­self not do­ing it, that’s just because your mind is playing tricks on you. That’s all and you just have to get over that.

With a health coach, you have some­one to help you live a healthy life with all the re­sources that you need

What do those re­sources look like? They might look like recipes. They might look like hand­outs. They might look like chat­ting in the group pro­gram or in one-on-one sessions.

It’s about you hav­ing the tools that you need to walk your jour­ney and understand that you are be­ing taken care of and that you will get to where you want to get to.

Having a clear objective will help you achieve your lifestyle goals

One of the first things that's re­al­ly im­por­tant is un­der­stand­ing your ob­jectives. If you sign up and think, I'm go­ing to work with a health coach, specif­ical­ly, Dr. Orlena in a year's time.

What is it that I want to have achieved? I want to have changed my re­la­tion­ship with food. I want to be able to cre­ate healthy food in an easy way, such that it's just on au­topi­lot.

It’s different for dif­fer­ent peo­ple, be­cause some peo­ple. It de­pends where your start­ing point is.

Understand that your mind will want you to stick to your old, unhealthy habits

Dur­ing that jour­ney, you still have to un­der­stand your mind. Your mind might say to you, ‘Oh my good­ness, this is just about eat­ing veg­eta­bles and do­ing more ex­er­cise. I knew this at the be­gin­ning. Why am I pay­ing this mon­ey to do this?’

That is your mind play­ing tricks on you again. Your mind should be saying, ‘This is great. I can do it.’ That's some­thing that you need to learn as you go through this jour­ney.

I hope that gives you a clear­er idea of the work that I do be­hind the scenes with my both one-on-one clients and my group clients. In the end, you come out with healthy habits, healthy eat­ing, healthy exercise, healthy sleep rou­tine, and a good mind­set.

You can do what­ev­er you set your mind to once you’ve nailed the mindset pillar of healthy living

Once you've nailed the mind­set bit, you sud­den­ly re­al­ize that you can do what­ev­er you set your mind to. You've learned how to ap­ply it to healthy liv­ing, but you can also ap­ply it to oth­er things as well.

You might want to im­prove your re­la­tion­ship with your kids or your part­ner or your friends, or you might want to go and do some­thing else that you've nev­er done be­fore. Suddenly, it be­comes so much eas­i­er when you have those mindset tools.
