"Hello, hello, hello. Welcome to Fit and Fabulous with me, Dr. Orlena. Super excited to be here! Today I want to ask you a big question. Are you in control of your mind and your behavior? Now, why is this a big question? Because you want to lead a healthy life, so you want to lose weight. You wanna do all of those things, get more energy, lead a healthy life, everything that we talk about in this group and on this podcast, except that you are not doing it."

Exploring Perfectionism and Control

"And then the question becomes, why? Why aren't you doing it? And one answer is because you aren't in control of your behavior or your mind. So the other day I was chatting with my son. I'm reading him this book, it is called 'Superpowered: Transform Anxiety Into Courage, Confidence, and Resilience' by Renny Jane and Dr. Shefali. And it's a great book. I totally recommend it."

Perfectionism and Procrastination

"It's basically really looking at thoughts and emotions, but on a level that kids understand it. And one of the things that it was talking about was procrastination and how procrastination... oh, sorry, perfectionism. Perfectionism. People, you know, think about perfectionism really as being perfect and getting things done amazingly, amazingly. But actually the problem with perfectionism is that it really is about doing nothing because if you can't do it perfectly, you are not going to do it."

Taking Control: Recognizing What You Can Control

"One of the things that came up for my son is he says he doesn't like drawing. Why doesn't he like drawing? Because he thinks his drawings aren't good. He judges his drawings and therefore he gets to the stage where he's like, well, I don't enjoy drawing because I'm not good at it. And we were talking about this now. One of the things that they mentioned was being able to look at things that you can control and things that you can't control."

The Four Pillars of Healthy Living

"One of the things that you can't control when you are looking at weight loss is the figure on the scale. You can't control how your body loses weight. What you can control is what you do—how you eat, how you exercise, how you think, how you sleep. All of those things are hard. Yes, those four pillars."

"Now, if you're listening, if you're looking at the video, the Facebook Live, you can see this picture here. It looks like there's an arm and inside this arm are things that I can control, and outside are things that I can't control. The thing that it's got written, there's lots of little bubbles that you can fill in. Think about all the things that you can control, and it says 'my behavior' and the things that you can't control. The example they've given is the weather."

Understanding Control and Emotions: Lessons from Children

"Now, when my son looked at this, now my son is 10, he was like, wait, that my behavior, that bubble with my behavior is in the wrong place. I can't control my behavior. It should be in the things that I cannot control. And this was a little bit of an aha moment because when you are busy thinking, I can't control my behavior, and I understand why he thinks he can't control his behavior, he gets upset for various things."

The Path to Positive Brain: Shifting Thoughts and Emotions

"So my friend, that is what I want to say to you today. You can change your thoughts and you can change your emotions. Now if you're thinking, okay, this all sounds great, but how exactly do we do this? Well, I refer you to the workshop that I did last week. It's called 'Positively Healthy Weight Loss with Ease and Flow.' And I lay out exactly what happens in your mind and talk about negative brain and positive brain."

Applying Positivity to Behavior

"And once you understand this system, you can start applying it to your brain and going, oh, okay, I understand what is going on here. So if you haven't already watched that, go and watch it. If you're listening to the podcast, then it was last week's podcast. So go and listen to last week's podcast. But this is really powerful stuff."

Embracing Change: Controlling Thoughts and Behavior:

"Would anybody ever be able to play a piano or any musical instrument if they felt that they couldn't control their hands, if they weren't able to control their hands? Humans would not do anything. We wouldn't be able to eat. We wouldn't have the culture that we have, but we all know that we can control our hands."
